When we think about Florida, it is impossible not to think about Cubans. Our history here is not written in textbooks alone—it lives in the streets of Miami, in the aroma of café cubano at sunrise, in the sound of music that drifts from Little Havana, and in the tireless work of men and women who built a new life from scratch.

The first generations of Cubans who arrived in Florida did so with broken hearts but unbreakable spirits. They left behind their island, their homes, and even their families, carrying only faith in freedom and the desire to work. They opened small businesses with little more than courage—bakeries, bodegas, cafeterías—places that became the heart of our neighborhoods. With every loaf of Cuban bread baked and every cup of coffee served, they wove themselves into the fabric of Florida’s economy. Today, those humble beginnings have grown into thriving enterprises, from family businesses to corporations, proving that sacrifice and perseverance can create lasting prosperity.

But Cubans gave more than just economic growth. They gave Florida their soul. Our music, our art, our literature—each carries a piece of the island, a memory of what was lost and a celebration of what was rebuilt. Celia Cruz’s voice still echoes with the joy of being Cuban, Willy Chirino, Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada songs remind us that hope never dies, and every artist, writer, and poet who carried their culture across the ocean left a gift for the generations to come.

And let’s not forget the leaders who rose from our community—men and women who stepped into politics and public service, who fought for freedom, defended democracy, and made sure our voices were heard. They proved that Cubans are not only dreamers and workers—we are also leaders, determined to shape the future of the country that welcomed us.

To the new generation of Cuban immigrants arriving today, I say this: you are the heirs of greatness. The generations before you gave everything—sleep, comfort, their own homeland—so that you could have a chance to dream freely. Honor their sacrifice. Learn from their discipline, their humility, their love for family, and their unshakable belief that tomorrow can always be better.

You carry their legacy, but you also carry the opportunity to write your own chapter. Be bold. Be hardworking. Be proud of your roots. Florida doesn’t just need Cubans—it needs the exceptional values that Cubans have always brought: resilience, unity, creativity, and faith.

The Cuban story in Florida is not just about survival—it’s about triumph. It’s about turning loss into opportunity, sadness into art, sacrifice into progress. It’s about remembering where we came from, while building a future that honors those who paved the way.

May every new Cuban generation walk with the same fire, the same hope, and the same unshakable dignity that has defined our community for more than half a century.

Cuando pensamos en Florida, es imposible no pensar en los cubanos. Nuestra historia aquí no está escrita solo en libros de texto, vive en las calles de Miami, en el aroma del café cubano al amanecer, en el sonido de la música que proviene de Little Havana y en el incansable trabajo de hombres y mujeres que construyeron una nueva vida desde cero.

Las primeras generaciones de cubanos que llegaron a Florida lo hicieron con corazones rotos pero espíritus irrompibles. Dejaron atrás su isla, sus hogares e incluso sus familias, llevando solo fe en la libertad y el deseo de trabajar. Abrieron pequeños negocios con poco más que coraje ( panaderías, bodegas, cafeterías), lugares que se convirtieron en el corazón de nuestros vecindarios. Con cada barra de pan cubano horneada y cada taza de café servida, se tejieron en el tejido de la economía de Florida. Hoy en día, esos humildes comienzos se han convertido en empresas prósperas, desde empresas familiares hasta corporaciones, lo que demuestra que el sacrificio y la perseverancia pueden crear una prosperidad duradera.

Pero los cubanos dieron más que solo crecimiento económico. Le dieron su alma a Florida. Nuestra música, nuestro arte, nuestra literatura, cada uno lleva un pedazo de la isla, un recuerdo de lo que se perdió y una celebración de lo que se reconstruyó. La voz de Celia Cruz todavía resuena con la alegría de ser cubana, las canciones de Willy Chirino, Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada nos recuerdan que la esperanza nunca muere, y cada artista, escritor y poeta que llevó su cultura a través del océano dejó un regalo para las generaciones venideras.

Y no olvidemos a los líderes que surgieron de nuestra comunidad: hombres y mujeres que entraron en política y servicio público, que lucharon por la libertad, defendieron la democracia y se aseguraron de que nuestras voces fueran escuchadas. Demostraron que los cubanos no solo son soñadores y trabajadores, también somos líderes, decididos a dar forma al futuro del país que nos dio la bienvenida.

A la nueva generación de inmigrantes cubanos que llegan hoy, digo esto: ustedes son los herederos de la grandeza. Las generaciones anteriores a ti lo dieron todo (sueño, comodidad, su propia patria) para que pudieras tener la oportunidad de soñar libremente. Honra su sacrificio. Aprende de su disciplina, su humildad, su amor por la familia y su inquebrantable creencia de que el mañana siempre puede ser mejor.

Llevas su legado, pero también llevas la oportunidad de escribir tu propio capítulo. Sé audaz. Sé muy trabajador. Siéntete orgulloso de tus raíces. Florida no solo necesita cubanos, necesita los valores excepcionales que los cubanos siempre han aportado: resiliencia, unidad, creatividad y fe.

La historia cubana en Florida no se trata solo de supervivencia, se trata del triunfo. Se trata de convertir la pérdida en oportunidad, la tristeza en arte, el sacrificio en progreso. Se trata de recordar de dónde vinimos, mientras construimos un futuro que honre a aquellos que allanaron el camino.

Que cada nueva generación cubana camine con el mismo fuego, la misma esperanza y la misma dignidad inquebrantable que ha definido a nuestra comunidad durante más de medio siglo.

Porque al final del día, ser cubano en Florida no se trata solo de herencia, se trata de legado. Y es nuestro para continuar.
